Henry Strathearn was the son of James Strathearn, born 1864, Pitcairlie, Newburgh, died 1948, and Mary Lumsden, born 1860, Auchtermuchty, died 1901.
James Strathearn was the gamekeeper at Pitcairlie, living in Gamekeeper's Cottage, in 1891, 1901, 1911.
James Strathearn's father was George Strathearn, born 1833, Perth, Forrester at Pitcairlie in 1861, 1871, 1881, and Janet Scobie, born 1834, Scone, Perth.
Pitcairlie House was owned by the Cathcarts. Taylor Cathcart, born 1778, Pitcairlie, Newburgh, Fife, JP and landed proprietor married Frances A.D. Baxter, born 1807. Pitcairlie was inherited by their son Robert, born 1833, also a JP, whose wife Agnes, was still living at Pitcairlie House, with a nurse and six servants, in 1911. Robert and Agnes had three sons, James, 1858-1935; William 1859-1940 and Alan born 1861.
Henry Strathearn was conscripted after his 18th birthday, in 1915 or 1916. He joined the Scots Guards and was sent to France. He survived the carnage of Third Battle of Ypres, 31 July to 2 August 1917, and known as Passchendaele, but was killed at the Battle of Menin Road Ridge on 14 September 1917.
