He is wearing a green doublet, possibly even a red doublet, with white piping and a feather bonnet. The hackle is dark and therefore red. The collar dogs are tall and could be the figure of St Andrew. Pte J Petrie was a Cameron Highlander, so if he was wearing a feather bonnet the hackle would be white.

2. Pte J Petrie, QOCH, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He wears a dark green, or possibly red, jacket with white facings, with grass buttons and St Andrew figure on his collar. He does not wear a bonnet.

3. Pte H Suttie, King's L'pool. King's Liverpool Regiment. He wears a khaki jacket with webbing belt with brass clasp and runners. He wears a khaki cap with the indistinct horse badge the King's Liverpool Regiment.

Pte Murray, HLI, Pte R Taylor, Lovat Scouts and Pte D Hardie, Scottish Rifles, are harder to pick out.

4. Pte J Murray, HLI, Highland Light infantry. He is two left of Capt Fairlie. He wears a khaki jacket. He wears a blue Glengarry bonnet with a diced border and the HLI badge. Although officers wore a plain blue Glengarry, other ranks wore a Glengarry with a diced border.

5. Pte R Taylor, Lovat's S't, Lovat Scouts. He is above the seated figure wearing a cap. He is wearing a khaki jacket with distinctive black leather ammunition pouches on a cross belt, worn by cavalry and reconnaissance units. The stag's head crest of the Frasers appears on his collar. He is not wearing a bonnet, which would have been black with a black and white died border.

6. Pte D Hardie, S.H., Scottish Rifles, Cameronians. He is above the seated figure on the right. He wears a khaki jacket and dark blue Glengarry bonnet with Cameronian badge of a star in a wreath.

Standing centre, left, wearing a khaki shirt and tie, cut away khaki service dress jacket, with regimental badges on the lapels, Sam Browne belt, two bands and three stars, for Captain, on his sleeves, Mackenzie tartan trews, black riding boots. He wears a dark blue Glengarry bonnet, with an HLI badge, similar, but squarer than the Black Watch badge. He carries his leather gloves and a cane in his left hand and a cigarette in his right.
