Son of Williamina Anderson of Upper Greens, Auchtermuchty.

Regiment: 10th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

Died: Killed in Action, France 3 May 1917. Aged 23.

Buried: No known grave. Commemorated on Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 9.

John Kelbie Anderson was born 26 October 1892, at Braehead, Auchtermuchty, the son of Wilhelmina Anderson. He was the grandson of Emily Anderson, born 1842, Auchtermuchty.

In 1901 Emily Anderson was living at Braehead, Burnside, working as a laundress, with two daughters, Helen, born 1867, laundress, and Wilhemina, born 1873, factory linen weaver, the mother of John. There were four grandchildren all born in Auchtermuchty; James, born 1890, John, born 1892, Alexander, born 1895, and Jane, born 1899.

In 1911 Emily Anderson, now 70, was living in a four roomed house in Upper Greens, Auchtermuchty, with her daughters Helen, 45, pirn winder, and Wilhelmina, 38, weaver. All three women were described as single. Also living with Emily Anderson were her grandchildren, John, 18, railway fireman, North British Railway; Alexander 16, labourer, Bleachfield, Jane 12, Wilhelmina, 4 and Agnes 11 months. James Anderson, who was 21, was away from home.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CUPAR AND ST ANDREWS DISTRICT ROLL OF HONOUR.

Recruting was again satisfactory at Cupar during the past week.

The following is the Roll of Honour: -

John Anderson, quarryman, Auchtermuchty, to A. and S.H. FIFE HERALD

 

John Anderson joined 10th Battalion Princes Louise's (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders).

The 10th Battalion was mobilised for war in France on 11 May 1915. In May 1916 it transferred to 26th Brigade in the 9th Division. During 1916 the Battalion fought at the Battles of Albert, Bazenin, Deville Wood and Le Transloy.

John Anderson was promoted Corporal. On 9 April 1917 the Battalion was engaged in the Battle of Scarpe. Corporal John Anderson was killed in action on 3 May 1917 on the second last day of the battle.

He was described as born in Auchtermuchty and living in Auchtermuchty.
